Beautiful Joy: The Superpower of Perseverance
At our organization, we believe every individual with Down syndrome possesses extraordinary gifts that make our world brighter. Sometimes those gifts appear in remarkable achievements. Sometimes they show up in everyday acts of kindness, courage, and determination. And sometimes, they come wrapped in a smile that changes everyone around them.
Meet Meili Joy Hill, a vibrant 10-year-old whose name means "Beautiful Joy." Anyone who knows Meili will tell you that her name couldn't be more fitting.
Meili was adopted from China in 2019 at just three years old, one of the last children to come home before the world changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since joining her family, she has transformed their lives in ways they never could have imagined.
"She is nothing short of a miracle," her family shares. "She has taught us more in the seven years she's been home than we could ever learn ourselves."
One of Meili's greatest superpowers is her perseverance.
When she encounters a challenge, she doesn't back away. She meets it with determination, courage, and a willingness to keep trying. Over the past seven years, she has learned English, learned how to swim, skate, and even play the violin—an instrument many musicians consider one of the most difficult to master.
For Meili, success isn't about taking the easy path. It's about embracing opportunities and refusing to let obstacles define what is possible.
Her biggest challenge is speech. Sometimes people mistakenly assume that because she communicates differently, she doesn't understand or cannot express her needs. But Meili consistently proves otherwise.
Given time, patience, and the chance to be heard, she finds a way to communicate. She demonstrates that understanding and connection come in many forms.
In fact, one of the most beautiful examples of this is her relationship with the violin.
When she was younger, her family discovered her fascination with the instrument. They weren't sure where the interest came from—perhaps she had seen one before, perhaps she simply felt drawn to it. Whatever the reason, they found an incredible teacher and decided to give her the opportunity to explore that passion.
Today, Meili plays the violin.
While speaking and singing words clearly remains difficult, music has become another voice for her. Through every note she plays, the violin speaks on her behalf.
"She is not able to speak or sing the words to different songs clearly yet," her family explains, "but she can make the violin speak for her."
Beyond her accomplishments, Meili's greatest gift may be the way she loves people.
She laughs when others are laughing and brings joy wherever she goes. She has a wonderful sense of humor and an incredible ability to see the best in everyone. When she notices someone who needs help, she wants to be the one to offer it. Her kindness, empathy, and genuine love for others create smiles wherever she goes.
Her family is quick to point out that they don't see themselves as extraordinary.
"We're not special or gifted parents. We just had room in our hearts and home for another blessing to add to our family, and now we're able to watch this amazing gift thrive. All she needed was a chance."
Every child deserves the opportunity to discover their strengths, pursue their passions, and share their gifts with the world. When we provide support, belief, and opportunity, incredible things happen.
Meili's story reminds us that superpowers don't always look like what we expect. Sometimes they look like learning a new language. Sometimes they sound like a violin melody. Sometimes they shine through persistence in the face of challenges or through a heart that sees the good in everyone.
And sometimes, they simply look like a little girl named Beautiful Joy who makes the world brighter by being exactly who she is.
